A precious one has gone from us. A voice we loved is stilled. A place is vacant in our hearts, which will never be filled. On Tuesday, March 7, 2017, Bro. John Edward Turner was called home to be with God.
John was born on October 12, 1943 in Amite County, Mississippi to the late Drucilla and Elzie Turner. His siblings included Ernest, Benton, Thomas, Betty, Martha, Shirley, Ethel and Lillie.
John accepted Christ at an early age at the Chisolm Mission A. M. E Church. He later became a member of New Zion Union M. B. Church where he served on the Usher Ministry. He moved about a lot and later reunited with New Zion Union where he attended Worship Services, Bible Class and Sunday school where his membership remained until his death.
John “Jit” attended Lincoln County Training School, Jim Hill and Eva H. Harris Schools where he was a member of the Class of 1964.
John “Jit” was married to Lee Ester Lyons Turner and they were the parents of John, Jr., Robert, James, Willie, Anthony, Kathy, Tom, Cortney, Gloria and Dee Geona.
He was a truck driver for over thirty years. He held various other jobs: trailer fabricator, sawmill worker, pulpwood hauler just to name a few. He enjoyed people, hunting, fishing, telling jokes and being the up-beat one in charge.
He was preceded in death by: his parents – Drucilla & Elsie Turner, wife – Lee Ester, one son – Joseph, one daughter – Cynthia and one brother – Ernest.
He leaves to cherish his memories: six sons – John Jr. (Gwen) Turner of Greenwood, MS, Robert Turner, James Turner, Willie Johnson, Anthony (Felicia) Johnson, and Tom Green , all of Fort Worth Texas ; four daughters – Kathy (Konrad) Green of Brookhaven, MS, Gloria Billings and Cortney Smith of McComb, MS and Dee Geona Turner of New Orleans, LA; brothers – John Paul Turner of Chicago, IL; Thomas Turner of Brookhaven, MS, Benton (Deborah) Turner of Bogue Chitto, MS, Willie Ray (Lillie) Turner of Columbus, MS; sisters – Betty Louise Martin of Baton Rouge, LA, Martha Wells of New Orleans, LA, Shirley (Alfonso) Ezzell of Fort Washington, MD, Ethel (Rev. Mitchell) Redd of Bogue Chitto, MS and Lillie Cameron of Summit, MS; 21 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
