Jeanette (Net) Byrd Obituary

The life and legacy of Jeanette (Net) Byrd

Sunrise July 16, 1945 – Sunset January 12, 2017

Jeanette (Net) Byrd was born in Brookhaven, Mississippi (Lincoln County) on July 16, 1945 to the late Willie Byrd and Geneva Wilson Byrd where they preceded her in death. Net confessed Christ at the early age of 8 years old at Siloam MBC (Brookhaven, MS) under the leadership of the late Pastor Ed Smith. She sang in a gospel group with her mother, sisters and others called “The Happy Land Singer”, where they would serenade many cities in the south with their melodious voices. This group also broadcasted on radio throughout the state of Mississippi singing God’s praises.

Net attended Progress Elementary School and Eva H. Harris High School, where she graduated in May of 1964. She was the greatest basketball player of her era. Eva Harris High School played a basketball game against Jim Hill School from Jackson, MS. Eva Harris beat Jim Hill’s 54-50 and Net scored 52 of those points. She was highly recognized. Nets family relocated to the West side of Chicago, Illinois in 1964, where she joined the Mt. Ebenezer MBC under the leadership of Pastor Eugene Trumbull. She sang in the gospel choir under the leadership of Pastor James Cox and Pastor Perry McGee, where her membership continued under Pastor Leon Miller.

Net united in holy matrimony to Vernon Slater; to this union two daughters were born Wanda and Letitia; later, she met and married Claudell Howard; to this union two daughters were born Felisha and Treli. After that marriage ended, she met Lemont Pierce arid gave birth to a daughter Patsy. She raised five wonderful daughters and three beautiful grandsons, Keon, Travion and Kiante.

Net had a strong passion for cooking and would cook for all family gatherings. She also reached out to help feed the homeless and anybody in the neighborhood who was in need of food. She was very kindhearted and was unique in her own special way. To know her was to LOVE her.

Net was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Geneva Byrd, Sister Lee Edna Jones, Brothers; Johnny Byrd (BB) and Edward Byrd (Pete), and extended daughter Delores Johnson.
