Minor Wilcher Obituary

MinorWilcherCHAMPAIGN – Mr. Minor Lee Wilcher, 71, of Champaign departed this life on Wednesday (July 27, 2016) at Heartland Health Care Center, Champaign.

He was born on Jan. 16, 1945, in Brookhaven, Miss., to the late Artie “T” Byrd and Ester Mae Fairman Wilcher. He confessed Christ at an early age. He graduated from Eva Harris High School in Brookhaven, Miss, class of 1964.

Minor Lee, affectionately known as “Homp,” “Byrd” or “Red” to many, relocated to Urbana and was later united in Holy Matrimony to Bessie Lee Mullen in 1966. God blessed this union with three children.

He was a member of Freewill M.B. Church for many years and later moved his membership to Greater Holy Temple Church, where he was a faithful servant serving in various ministries.

Minor Lee worked at Humko in Champaign for 30 years. He was an avid bowler and bowled in the Ebonite League for many years. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and family gatherings. He enjoyed cooking and growing vegetables.

He leaves to mourn and cherish his memories one son, Bryan (Jelenea) Wilcher of Olive Branch, Miss.; two daughters, Nicole (Frank) McCurry and Katina Wilcher of Champaign; a loving aunt who reared him, Marie Fairman Byrd of Urbana and another loving aunt, Mary Nell Fairman of Champaign; seven grandchildren, Jordan Wilcher of Atlanta, Ga., Morgan and Paige Wilcher of Olive Branch, Miss., Corey Wilcher, Shauna McCurry, Kortney and Kaleb Wilcher, all of Champaign; his wife of 34 years, Bessie Wilcher of Champaign; five brothers; 13 sisters; a very special goddaughter, Brittany Algee of Champaign; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends whom he loved dearly.

Minor Lee was preceded in death by his parents; his maternal and paternal grandparents; his two special uncles; three brothers; and four sisters.

Funeral services will be at noon Friday, Aug. 5, at Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, 1310 N. Sixth St., Champaign, with the Rev. Rickey E. Parks as pastor/officiant. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Friday at the church. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Urbana.
