Eva H Harris’s History

Eva H. Harris School had a relatively short history. The groundbreaking ceremony was in September 1958 for the new Eva Harris Negro School for all negro high school students and part of the negro elementary students in the Lincoln County School District. The estimated cost of the new facility was $279,690. The new facility was built on a site near two other negro schools, Mullins Elementary and Alexander High School.

The first faculty meeting was held on August 26, 1960. The doors opened to students in September of 1960. The dedication program was in the gymnasium on March 12, 1961.

In May of 1961, the first class graduated from Eva H. Harris. The principal was Mrs. Eva H. Harris; assistant principal; Mr. Lawrence Prater. Class sponsors were Mrs. Catherine D. Rance, Mrs. Sophia Page, Mr. Charles Thompson, and Mr. Thomas J. Patterson. Eleventh grade sponsors were Mr. Melton McMorris, Mrs. Emily P. O’ Neal and Miss Frances J. Brown. Tenth grade sponsors were Mr. I. C. Griffith, Miss Virgie Mae Gray, and Mrs. Ollie B. Coleman. Ninth grade sponsors were Mr. C. B. Johnson, Mrs. LaMildred Prater, and Mrs. Mary L. Grimmett. Eighth grade sponsors were Mrs. A. G. Coleman, Miss Lou Vella Markham, and Miss Louise Braxton. Seventh grade sponsors were Miss Augustine T. Johnson, Mrs. Mary Jane Wilson, and Miss Patrinella Thadison. Junior High Head Teacher was Mr. A. G. Coleman. Elementary school head teacher was Mrs. Eloise G. Brent.

In 1962, the principal was Mrs. Eva H. Harris; assistant principal; Mr. Lawrence Prater; the class sponsors were Mrs. Catherine D. Rance and Mr. Melton McMorris. The girls basketball team coached by Mr. Clarence Bernard Johnson were State Champions.

In 1963, the principal was Mrs. Eva H. Harris; assistant principal; Mr. Lawrence Prater; Class sponsors were Mrs. Catherine D. Rance, Mr. I. C. Griffith, and Mr. Melton McMorris.

In 1964, the principal was Mrs. Eva H. Harris; assistant principal; Mr. Lawrence Prater; Class sponsors were Mrs. Catherine D. Rance, Mr. Clarence B. Johnson. Mrs. Eva H. Harris retired after the 1964 school year.

In 1965, the principal was Mr. T. J. Rance; assistant principal; Mr. Lawrence Prater; Class sponsors were Mrs. Catherine D. Rance, Mr. Clarence B. Johnson.

In 1966, the principal was Mr. T. J. Rance; Class sponsors were Mrs. Catherine D. Rance, Mrs. Sallie E. Herring, and Mr. Clarence B. Johnson.

In 1967, the principal was Mr. T. J. Rance; Class sponsors were Mrs. Catherine D. Rance, Mrs. George Marsalis, and Mr. Clarence B. Johnson.

The class of 1968 will probably be remembered as the class that almost wasn’t. They refused to line up to march for graduation until after their parents had a meeting in the library to clear up a mix-up on monies that they had worked hard all year-long to earn. The Principal was Mr. T. J. Rance, Mr. Connie Smith, Superintendent; and class sponsors were Mrs. Catherine D. Rance, Mr. Mordine Bailey, Mr. Clarence B. Johnson, and Mr. Melton McMorris.

In 1969, the school principal was Mr. T. J. Rance. Class sponsors were Mrs. Mary P. Smith, Miss Annie Lou Dillon, and Mr. Clarence B. Johnson. In the fall of 1969, the Eva H. Harris football team played in the first annual South Mississippi Bowl. The score was 22-18. Mr. Percy Rauls was the head coach. Assistant coaches were Robert Jones and George Jordan.

In January of 1970, the students of 1970 class were assigned to various schools within the Lincoln County School District because of school integration. In May of 1970, 75 seniors assigned to Friendship, Bogue Chitto, and Progress returned to Eva H. Harris for graduation ceremonies. The 1970 class was the last class to graduate from Eva H. Harris.

From 1971 – 1994, Eva H. Harris went through a variety of name changes and principals:

1971-78 – Eva Harris Middle School, Clarence “Pete” Dixon, Principal

1978-79 – Eva Harris Middle School, John Calcote, Principal

1979-83 – Eva Harris Pre-Vocational Technical Center (PVTC), Percy Rauls, Principal

1983-85 – Eva Harris PVTC, Mike Lofton, Principal

1985-86 – Eva Harris PVTC, Jim Cobbs, Principal

1986-94 – Eva Harris PVTC, Mike Warren and Jackie McGee, Principal
